Dec 21, PM. It has 4 LAN ports in the back. What I'd like to do it have the TC connected to it and then have the AE in another room to extend the network wirelessly if possible. Here, I also assume that you have the newer "tower" shaped version of the AirPort Extreme, or the "flat" or "square" version of the product, correct?
Yes, I have a closet that houses the modem and would house the TC If possible. Then I'd have the flat square AirPort Extreme ideally in the kitchen or something.
I Originally got a wifi extender, but that just created a different network that I had to use and change to when walking to another part the house, like you said. We can provide the steps to setup the TC in the closet, but I'm not sure how well the TC wireless network is going to perform since the signal must pass through at least one wall just to get out of the closet.
If you are looking for improved performance though, I would recommend locating the TC outside of the closet, if possible. Power up the TC for a few minutes, then hold in the reset button the back of the device for 10 seconds and release. Type in a password that you want to use for the wireless network and base station. The utility will set up everything for you in a minute or two. When you see the message of Setup Complete, click Done. Close the utility and you should now be able to log onto the new wireless network that you named and enter the password to connect.
It turns out I think both answers are correct, in fact: if the Time Capsule doesn't have an ethernet connection!! So, for people who just want to have a wireless storage solution using Time Capsule, they need to disable routing, as zhovner said, and change to DHCP client mode!
JaimeSantaCruz There is no problem with this setting. Otherwise it will run a DHCP server and set up a separate subnet, which is just silly. You should actually do BOTH of the things suggested by the other answers. Seems that Apple knows this is the correct configuration.
